Aligning your goals to balance your life

Don't you just love it when you have those little moments of self discovery? 
I had one of those moments this morning I was going through a goal setting exercise where I brainstorm a whole lot of stuff with myself and set goals into 3 separate areas.

1. Personal Development Goals
2.Thing Goals
3.Financial and economic Goals

and what I found is that I had a problem in coming up with Thing Goals, now what was strange about this is when I have done this particular exercise in the past this had always been the biggest and easiest list for me to come up with. Now mind you it has been some time since I have done this particular workshop and a lot of things have changed in my life over the last few years so I got curious as to why my thing list was so short compared to the past.

First thing I did was go back and look at my old lists to see what was on there then I went back and looked at where my life was back then as opposed to now to see what was different and tool I have always liked to use was what I call the life balance wheel where I divide the wheel into segments of my life and rate each area on a scale of 1-10 then draw a line connecting the segments to see how balanced or unbalanced my life is at any particular time and what I noticed was that when my life was the most unbalanced was when I seemed to have the biggest thing lists

As you can see from the example above sometimes that wheel can be a long way from round and if you've ever driven a car with an unbalanced wheel you'd know the ride can get pretty bumpy and the faster you go the worse the bumps get.

What I deducted from this looking back I realised that I was putting lots of thing goals as a way to make up for the areas that were lacking but what I didn't realise at the time was that putting lots into topping up say career or finances was never going to compensate for what I was lacking in areas like relationships in fact now I see it made the situations worse because I wasn't addressing the cause of the problems I was using material things to mask my deficiencies.

Thankfully these days my wheel is a lot more balanced and I now take a lot more notice of where I need to be working to keep it as close to round as I can. Of course there are still things that I want but now they tend to be things I think will not only enrich my life but also enhance the other areas not create diversions from things I don't want to face.

At the end of the day success is a very personal thing and is very different for each and every one of us. For some it's all about power and wealth, for others its a about self fulfilment and enlightenment  but above all I believe it's about being happy and enjoying the journey. All the money in the world is no good if you don't have have health and fulfilling relationships and on the other hand having a great relationship may not be enough if your homeless and on the street living in poverty for all of us we need to find our little niche in the world our own happy place where we balance the needs in all areas of our life. Reverting back to your default

Hi Gang

It's been a while since I've posted up here so I thought I'd take this opportunity to share a learning that I have had over the last few months. They say the human mind is the most powerful computer there is and like all computers they come with default settings that you change to best suit what you want them to do.

As many of you would know I work in the field of Personal Development and I run my business almost 100% online and while this makes life very convenient as I can run my company from the comfort of my own home, it does not come without some draw backs.

I choose to live in a rural area because I love being close to nature but unfortunately as far as technology goes us people who live in the sticks don't always get the same level of service as those who choose to live in the big city and that's we're both my latest challenge and also my learning experience stemmed from.

You see we have had a lot of drama pretty much from the new year getting internet conectivity as we were on a entirely wireless system that utilised mobile phone reception and for some reason was no longer working, a slight problem for someone running an online business from home. No problem I thought it would be a simple solution of changing ISP's and getting lines connected to the property for ADSL and when I spoke to them they assured me this would be the case.

Reality was almost 4 months without proper internet and as you can imagine it caused me a little stress, what I found is that after a little while I started to get frustrated and I found myself going back to my old habits of sleeping a little longer, spending nights in front of the TV after all I couldn't work my business and it wasn't my fault. Yes that's right I started to justify doing nothing and then it got worse I stopped not only working on my business I stopped working on me.

It was only when my fiance said something to me that I even realised I had reverted back to my default settings without even noticing I had gone back to the person I used to be the person that would settle for mediocre and I am extremely grateful to my beautiful lady for her gentle reminder. Now this was someone who lives and breathes personal development so you can imagine how easy this would be for those less devoted.

So the message I took away from all this is to be concious that when you're dealt a bum hand and circumstances outside your control cause you to lose momentum, that the road to success is paved with pot holes and your bound to hit a few. Just don't lose site of the bigger picture, stay focussed on your goals and watch you don't reset yourself to your default settings.

SUCCESS IS NOT ALL ABOUT WINNING

You may find the title of this weeks blog a little confusing. after all to be successful don't we need to win?
and the answer is yes but I also believe that an essential ingredient of any lasting success is failure or at least adversity.

You see I think obstacles and set backs are presented to us to test our measure to find out if we truly are worthy of achieving success. I heard a quote once that said "Show me a person who has never failed and I will show you a person who has never tried"

I know it's cliched but it so very true that it doesn't matter how many times you get knocked down what is important is how many times you get back up again. Life is always going to throw us a few curve balls but it's how we react to them that will shape our destiny for either the good or the bad. You can't control all of the events in your life but you CAN control how you react to them.

I love to read the biographies of people who have done extraordinary things and I am yet to read one where the person has not faced failure and hardship along the way, so why should you be any different? the answer is you're not so you are going to have to accept that speed bumps are going to be a real part of your journey and the higher you aim the bigger the risks you will need to take therefore the likelihood of things going wrong are much greater but so too are the rewards.

Lets look at a few very successful people that I'm sure you know and have a look at some of the obstacles they overcame to change the world.

 

Albert Einstein

  •  Had speech difficulties as a child
  • Failed his University Entrance Exam
  • Could not find work in the sciences and had to take a job with the Swiss Patent Office

Abraham Lincoln

  •  Fired from his Job
  • Defeated for state legislator
  • Failed in Business
  • Sweetheart Died
  • Had a nervous breakdown
  • Defeated for speaker
 


Steve Jobs

  • Abandoned by his birth parents
  • Ousted from Apple
  • Failed in business with Next Computers
 


Nelson Mandela

  • Expelled from college
  • Arrested for civil disobedience
  • Imprisoned for 28 years
So I think you would agree that these people have made a contribution to the world as we know it, none of them came from privileged backgrounds and all had more than their share of adversities to overcome. I think what's important here that when we face our challenges even if they knock us down for a while is to not give up on our dreams and ourselves. Many of the stories I have read speak of how they thought about throwing it in and somehow found the courage to keep going only to find that success was just around the next corner but had they given up all of our worlds would be a very different place. Even if right now you are facing something that has had you out of action for a while it's not too late to get back on the horse, sure you may have lost some time and probably momentum but I can assure you of one thing if you don't get back up you will never live the life that you aspire to and deserve.

7 TIPS FOR STAYING ON TRACK!

Well here we are half way through the first month of the new year.
How are you feeling? Energised and ready to tackle the world? Frustrated and confused? Or worse yet are you feeling nothing?

The last few months I’ve really had the pedal to the metal going flat out. Ive had some huge wins along the way, started a new business and have met some incredible entrepreneurial people so life should be great huh?  And it is but the last couple of weeks things just didn’t feel right, my results hit a plateau and then even started to dip and my motivation bucket seem to spring a leak and things weren’t as much fun.

Now this is where the old me would have taken my bat and ball and went home, after all I’d been working hard, keeping positive and despite that everything wasn’t going entirely my way. Fortunately that old me has been left well and truly in the past and has no place in either my present or my  future. So what did I do?

I stopped. Took a step back and took a look at what was going on. What was amazing how obvious the problem was as soon as I did this. I looked at my wins and then I looked at what I was doing and what I was thinking when I had those wins. Then I looked at what I was doing now tracked back to see when things started to change in terms of my results and then asked the question what was I doing differently?

It was then I realised I had completely changed the way I was operating and didn’t even know it. You see when I first started my business there wasn’t that much to do after all a brand new business doesn’t have any customers,  so I put all my attention into learning how to operate my business, how to market my business  what I was doing was putting most of my time into working on myself increasing my knowledge and skill sets and then putting my new found talents into action. I was like a kid in a candy store with a $100 note. I was fired up and rearing to go.

Soon things began to rock and roll, leads began to come in, I was busy with marketing my business, there were calls to make, presentation to do, follow ups to be done I was happy as a pig in mud this thing was really starting to come to life but what happened then is I got so busy working in my business I forgot about working on it and more importantly working on ME.

It has been a wonderful learning experience for me on the importance of keeping things focused and balanced and also the importance of measuring my progress and making lots of small adjustments to stay on track. You see you’ll save your self a lot of time and heartache by keeping track of where you are and continually adjusting your course in order to get where you want to go rather than going head down, bum up like a mad man and finding by the time you lift your head up for a look around that you’re miles away from where you intended to be, it’s akin to going on a road trip hitting the highway without knowing which way to go driving flat out without keeping an eye on the fuel gauge. Eventually you’ll run out of juice and have no idea where you are.

I make it a habit these days of when things don’t go quite right to ask myself what good can I take away from this experience and what did I learn and as a result I have put together my 7 Tips for staying on track

  1. GRATITUDE
Every morning before you start your day take 5 minutes to give thanks for all the great things and people you have in your life. This will keep you focused on what’s right and help you stay way from negative thinking.

  1. MEASURE AND CHANGE
At the end of each week step back and take a look at your results. Take stock of what was good and also what was not so good then try and figure out what action or actions cause that outcome. If the result was good do more of whatever you did to get that result, if it was bad then stop or change whatever you did that gave you that result.

  1. CELEBRATE
Celebrate your wins no matter how big or small, every action that moves you closer to your desires is a win, making one more phone call when you don’t feel like it is a win, working 10 more minutes to finish of that paperwork before you go home is a win. Make it a habit to celebrate all of your wins even the not so obvious this will make you feel fantastic and show you that you're are making progress even when on the surface it doesn’t look like it. Remember that you’re not alone in this even if you are running what you think is a one person show, your family are also making sacrifices when you are working late into the night they are missing out on spending time with you so make sure to include them in the celebrations and tell them how much you appreciate their support and love. Making time for them in your life is just as important as making your next sale or presentation so schedule in a few hours or an afternoon once a week to celebrate with them, have fun and leave your work behind. If you can swing it try and take a weekend off once a month just for them and you.

  1. GOALS
It’s been said that a millionaire looks at their goals once a day but a billionaire looks at theirs twice a day. If you haven’t got your goals written down somewhere you can see them everyday then it’s over before it starts. Write them down and read them everyday.

  1. VISUALISE
The mind can not tell the difference between real and imaginary events, through constant visualisation of how you want your life to be your brain will accept it as already being a done deal, This can be done in conjunction with your morning Gratitude session to really get your day off to a rocking start. Find a quiet place, close your eyes and see yourself being the person you want to be, doing the things you want to do, having the things you want to have. See the day your about to start going exactly as you want it to. This will have you absolutely vibrating with positive energy and ready to take on whatever comes your way.

  1. DREAMBUILD
This takes visualisation to a whole new level, get out there and touch, feel, smell and taste the life you want to live. Find your dream home and go visit it. Builders display villages are fantastic for this. Go and sit in the kitchen, let your kids fight over which room they want, go and sit in the study and return a business call. Hit the car dealership and test drive the car you want, go and spend a weekend in the town you want to live in.

  1. GET TO KNOW YOUR FUTURE SELF
This is a concept I only learnt recently and is extremely powerful. As you start to visualise your future on a regular basis you will wee a version of your self living the life you now dream of, a more confident, successful and powerful version of you. This is your Future Self. Get to know this person and when it comes time to make decisions ask your self “what would my future self do?”make time to talk to him or her often and you will soon see that you are your own best adviser and role model.

Just remember success isn’t meant to be easy otherwise everyone would achieve it. Welcome your failures and challenges learn from them and grow from them. The law of attraction will always bring to you what you most focus on so being grateful and focusing on what is good will bring you more of the same but also know that the same law of attraction will also attract it’s adverse as balance. Take these challenges and adversities as a sign you are on track and don’t let them stop you.

Will 2012 be just another year or will it be the year you change your world?

Welcome back
Here we are at the start of a brand new year so what will this coming year be for you?  more of the same or will you make it the year you really make a difference?

It's all so easy when that clock strikes midnight  and we celebrate the coming of the new year to rattle of a list of resolutions, most of all which will be dead before the end of the first day.So while it's vitally important to have a list of "goals" what's equally important is that we have a plan to "action" those goals and having what I refer to as "stickability" yes a very technical term I know but it simply means sticking to your plan and giving it time to manifest into success.

Over the holidays I had a little time to get in some reading so I re read "Losing my virginity" by Richard Branson and "Steve Jobs" by Walter Isaacson. Whilst Richard and Steve seemed to be very different characters some very distinct similarities shone through, an unstoppable passion for what they were doing, a crystal clear vision for what they wanted to achieve, a willingness to do whatever it took to achieve their dreams and an unwillingness to accept it couldn't be done even as many so called experts said it couldn't.

Another great little book I read that has now become one of my favourites is "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho a fictitious tale of Santiago the Shepherd boy and his quest for his Personal Legend or as I prefer to call it Life Purpose and what this book demonstrates beautifully is that set backs and perceived failures are actually part of our successes and and that we can not hope to find success without failure.

Many times over the coming year you will run into obstacles and setbacks, feel frustrated that things are just not happening, the people around you may even tell you "I told you so" the important thing is that you stay true to your self and your dreams. You see if you want to create a truly remarkable life you have to be willing to do the things most people wont in order to live the life that most people can't.

Right now 2012 is a blank canvass and you have the power to either create a copy, a mess or a masterpiece, it's your choice.
